The world’s strongest whirlpool is Saltstraumen Maelstrom is a very powerful whirlpool. The Nordic word was introduced into English by Edgar Allan Poe in his story “A Descent into the Maelstrom” in 1841.

The Nordic word borrowed from the Dutch Maelstrom and Maelstrom in Swedish. This is the combination of mala, to grind, and storm, which means current. This strongest whirlpool Maelstrom is found only in Saltstraumen in Norway.

It is located in Nordland, which is just 30 Km east of the city of Bodo. Which connect the outer Saltfjord with the large Skjerstadfjord. In turn, Skjerstadfjord is the world’s strongest Tidal.

Do you know? Up to 400 million m³ (tonnes) of seawater force their way through a 3-kilometer long and 150-meter wide strait every six hours, with water speeds reaching 37-kilometers per hour. This is used when Vortices(a powerful circular current of water) of up to 10 meters in diameter and 5 meters deep at the eye of the vortex are formed only when the current is at its strongest situation.

Before 2 thousand year ago, the area was very different due to the pressure from the glaciers that had covered all Norway for 10- thousands of year. This Strongest Whirpool Saltstraumen has existed for over 2 thousand years. The main reason behind the whirlpool is that the current is created when the tide tries to fill the Skjerstadfjord.

For the whirlpool to happen, the height difference between the sea level and the fjord can be up to one meter and the speed of the current trying to even out that difference can be up to 40 km per hour or 25 miles per hour. There is a time when the sound is navigable is when the current turns. No one suspects that when the sound is navigable and the current is almost calm, it became the world’s greatest whirlpool.
